What is a Digital Tech & What do they do

I get a lot of questions about what a digital tech does and why a shoot needs one. I wanted to take a moment and explain in detail what goes into a good digital tech and why you want to have one on set.

Effective organization is crucial for a Digital Tech to ensure a smooth shoot, as they juggle a lot of gear and responsibilities. To maximize time and efficiency, it's important to compartmentalize and keep everything in its place. Depending on the client's specific needs and preferences, a Digital Tech's approach to file organization may vary. By asking the right questions and understanding the job requirements, a Digital Tech can determine the necessary steps and equipment to ensure a successful shoot.

Investing in the right gear is essential for a Digital Tech to establish a reputable career in the industry. However, the latest technology isn't always necessary. Having backup equipment and ensuring that everything is functional and tested is more important than having the newest gear. Knowing which equipment to own and which to sub-rent is also crucial.

Once the shoot is wrapped, the Digital Tech ensures that all assets have been saved and usually at minimum makes a copy for the photographer's hard drive with additional copies made for the client or agency on request. It also standard practice to keep a copy of the shoot on their own drive following the shoot, just in case anything happens. It is important to communicate with your Digital Tech how long this period of redundancy should be as everyone has different standards or practices.

The Digital Tech’s primary concern on set is to avoid holding up the shoot and to work quickly and efficiently to achieve the look and feel the photographer wants. They pay attention to details and keep an eye on the images to ensure everything is perfect. They act as an addition pair of eyes, helping to catch anything that may have been overlooked.

They understand the importance of maintaining the images that get shot to ensure that the photographs are saved and easily accessible. They take measures to ensure redundant backups and are always current for anything that might go wrong on set.

During the shoot, the Digital Tech organizes the files for quick and easy access. They create separate folders depending on the type of shoot or requirements of the client. This ensures that anyone can quickly see what has been shot so far and what still needs to be done as well to keep a consistent look and feel to the shoot with easy to access references.

Improving skills and staying current with industry trends is crucial for a Digital Tech's success. Being a Digital Tech requires a ton of technical knowledge, as well as a knack for process and organization. A good Digital Tech’s experience and skills make them an asset to any team they work with.
